Career Development Guide

Encourage your student to visit Terra Dotta University's Career Development Center

The Career Development Center is a great place to start for both students and parents.  We suggest you begin their planning early - we can help all of our students, not just seniors.  As a parent, feel free to contact our Center to learn about all the valuable service and events we offer.  Encourage your student to take advantage of our services.

 Advise your student

Stress the importance of internships, volunteering,  part-time and summer employment opportunities, networking and campus involvement.  Help your student realize the value in exploring different fields to find the right fit for them.  Guide them through a self-inventory to assist them in realizing their strengths, talents, skill, and interests.  Research is a valuable tool - prompt your student to look for new opportunities.  Don't forget the importance of extra-curricular involvement.  Employers look for well-rounded students that have experience in many areas.

Be a Valuable Resource

Often times, the biggest resource is YOU.  Students look to their parents for advice and share your past experiences and expertise with them.  Encourage them to talk to you or other figures in their lives that can help guide their career path.  Help them write a resume, learn networking skills, practice for an interview, and prepare for their first of employment.

Most importantly, support your student.  This can be a confusing time and the "right" path often takes a few tries.  Don't let your student get discouraged.  Remember, decisions should ultimately be made by them, and supported by you.
