Choosing a Major

How Do I Decide On a Major?

Take time to compare and contrast the different majors available to you.  Select the majors that interest you most.  Remember that your major does not determine your entire career. You will have numerous opportunities to add to your training as new opportunities present themselves.

Narrowing and Comparing Careers and Majors

Gather Insights and Information to narrow choices

  • Type in keywords to get brief information on a career (working conditions, basic tasks, skills needed, salary & job outlook).
    • Occupational Information Network
    • Occupational Outlook HandbookChoosing a Major
  • Additional career research resources
    • Your local public library: there are typically entire sections devoted to careers.
    • Terra Dotta University Charles Buchow Library

  • Research TDU’s majors and courses that relate to your career interests.
  • Compare your narrowed down majors to the degree requirements to ensure it is a program for which you can gain admission.

Talk with On-campus Professionals

  • Contact a Career Services Advisor to learn about the majors that interest you and the requirements for that program.  The advisor can help you define your career goals and strategies based on the chosen majors.
